Arigato, nyan! The Boy and the Heron was one of the movies I most eagerly awaited in 2023 because it is by Studio Ghibli and writer / director Hayao Miyazaki who just turned 83 on January 5th and whose credits include Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Porco Rosso, Kiki’s Delivery Service, Purrincess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving castle, Ponyo, The Wind Rises, (purre-Ghibli) The Castle of Cagliostro, and (grandpurrented in as Ghibli) Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind, among many other supurrb anime movies and TV series, nyan!
The Boy and the Heron is an isekai-genre tale set in Japan during World War Two of a boy Mahito who moves to a country estate after his widowed dad remarries, and in the forest he is lured by a strange anthropurrmorphic heron into the spirit world and the realm ruled by anthropurrmorphic birds wherein he is aided by young sorceresses Himi, Kirihiko and the heron on his quest to rescue his stepmom and his late mom, but I should not further spoil the plot of the movie, which was released here in the USA in both the dubbed and subtitled versions, nyan.
I think that it is quite meowgnificent, and I loved everything about it, from the plot, the unrushed pace, the character and creature designs, to the animation, scenic art, editing, sound and Joe Hisaishi’s mewsic, nyan! Although I purrfur to watch foreign films subtitled, it has the terrific English dub cast that includes Christian Bale, Dave Bautista, Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, Barbara Goodson, Mark Hamill, Robert Pattinson and Florence Pugh, so I give it the high purraise, nyan! Spirited Away: Live on Stage, nyan!

Hai! Directed by Hayao Miyazaki, Studio Ghibli’s 2002 anime Spirited Away is one of my favorite movies! The isekai-genre plot pertains to 10 year old girl Chihiro with her parents who become trapped in the spirit world, where she winds up working at the huge bath house for the supurrnatural folk, but I do not wish to spoil too much of the plot! 20 years later, Tony-Award winning John Caird directed the stage adaptation of the film at the Toho Imperial Theater in Tokyo!
The purrformances, the costumes, the puppets, the revolving sets, the lighting, the purrojection FX, and the score by Joe Hisaishi purrformed by the octet are quite faitthful to the movie, and are as wonderful as wonderful can be! Last month, G-Kids has released this 2 disc Blu-ray set which includes two complete purrformances of it, at about 160 minutes apiece, with different but equally excellent casts, starring Mone Kamishiraishi and Kanna Hashimoto as Chihiro!
The video is purrsented in the original Japanese DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 with the optional English subtitles, whicha re in the bold White sans serif font with the fine Black outline. There are no extra features, but also included in the plastic case within the outer cardboard sleeve is the 11.5 x 18.25” double-sided poster, the images of which are shown on the front of the case. I will give it the “A” as in Aburaya! I am done, and now here is Nya-sensei to review
Godzilla Minus One!
Nyanko:
Arigato! In the past 70 years there have been 33 Japanese Godzilla movies and 4 American Godzilla movies, with Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire due in Apurril! Well, I think that last year’s Godzilla Minus One was among the best! Another reboot of the series, it is set in Japan near the end of World War II and focuses mostly on a circle of friends who despite the tragic losses have survived but must now try to rebuild their lives and survive the new existential threat.
If you purrfur a more seriously dramatic kaiju movie, this’un fits the biil supurrbly with the great story, sympathetic characters, the scary threats, the excellent FX, and the few moments of friends’ camaraderie that is charming but not silly. Mecha fans will likely be pleased with the numerous ships and aircraft too! I will give Godzilla Minus One the high grade of the A Minus, as my only quibble was that I wish it was a longer movie.
Having said that, while still pondering where it ranks compurred to purrior zilla movies, I would put it in the top five, along with Godzilla (1954), The Return of Godzilla (1984), Godzilla vs. Biollante (1989),and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II (1993)! My top ten zilla movies also likely includes Mothra vs. Godzilla (1964), Destroy All Monsters (1968), Godzilla vs. Mothra (1992) , Shin Godzilla (2016) and Godzilla: The Planet Eater (2018).
Although none from the Millennium Era (1999–2004) makes my top ten, Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla (2002) and Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S. (2003) might rank 11 & 12 on my list. None of the American movies would be high on the list of all 37 zillas, but we have been enjoying the Monarch: Legacy of Monsters TV series! Now for another FX and action-filled movie depicting heroes and monsters from the deep, here is Ilyana-sensei to discuss
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom!

Directed by James Wan, this sequel to the 2028 Aquaman movie is the fantasy / adventure tale of the fabled undersea kingdoms in which Arthur Curry / Aquaman, Justice Leaguer, the King of Atlantis and new dad teams up with his estranged brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to stop the vengeful villain Black Manta Yahya Abdul-Mateen) and his reluctant assitant Dr. Shin (Randall Park) from finding the ancient cursed meowgickal Trident and toxic Orichalcum fuel which could destroy not only Atlantis, but the entire planet.
The terrific cast also includes Amber Heard as Aquaman’s wife Queen Mera, Dolph Lundgren as her dad Nereus, Nicole Kidman Arthur & Orm’s mom Atlanna, Temuera Morrison as Arthur’s dad Tom, and Jani Zhao as Black Manta’s crewpurrson Stingray, plus John Rhys-Davies as the voice of the crab-like Brine King and Martin Short as the voice of Kingfish the pirate king. Also appurring are the Arthur & Mera’s infant son Arthur Jr. VFX creatures Topo the octopus, Storm the seahorse, and other land & sea creatures aplenty!
Unfortunately, Mera and Atlanna are not in it enough, and Vulko (Willem Dafoe) is not in this movie, nor are any of Aquaman’s Justice League friends. Although the movie seems too rushed and short, it is brimming with the action-packed, spectacular, lavish exotic locations creatures and mecha. In spite of the annoying cinematic techniques such as the speed-ramping, slow meowtion, snap zooms and so forth, which are typical of the DC Extended Universe movie series, I did think that the movie was a lot of family fun!
I do not wish to spoil more of the plot, but there is an amewsing mid-credits scene to wait for. In summation, I will give it the B grade, and I enjoyed it more than many of the purrior DCEU movies including any directed by Zach Snyder, and the more recent films such as Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, The Flash, and Blue Beetle. You know, Temuera Morrison stars as Boba Fett and voices the Clone Troopurrs in some of the Star Wars TV series, and nyow here is Myayr to review the

Hai! We love the live-action and animated Star Wars TV series such as Ahsoka, Andor, Obi-Wan, Boba Fett, The Bad Batch, Visions, and Tales of the Jedi! We have hoped that Disney would release them (and the various MCU TV series) on DVD or Blue-ray, na dlast moth that finally started to happen, with the release of Wandavision and the first two seasons of The Mandalorian! Each of those Mandalorian Collector’s Edition Blu-ray sets include 8 epurrsodes which total the bit over three hours Excluding the exrtra features, Season One is appurroximately 183 minutes and Season Two is appurroximately 199 minutes).
The 1080p video is purrsented in widescreen of the 2.39:1 aspect ratio with the audio choices of English 5.1 DTS-HDMA, English Descriptive, French & Spanish 5.1 Dolby Digital, with the very legible optional English, French & Spanish subtitles. Each set also includes three purretty 4.5 x 5.75” concept art cards. Inside the handsome steel box case, the 2 discs are in one plastic tray, so you have to pull out Disc One to get to Disc Two, and the cards are snugly clamped inside the box lid. Furthermore, each season includes two informative and entertaining documentary featurettes that purrtain to the making of the series!

Since the 1980’s they have also published their delightful not-for-sale, limited-edition annual wall calendar! This totally awesome 8.5×11” calendar opens up to reveal the monthly 17 x 11” spreads, each with the annotated date grid and lovely B&W illustrations of anthropurrmorphic felines and other species! Including the front and back covers, there are fourteen such pen and ink illustrations, and each year there is a different theme. So like, the 2023 theme was feline rulers, and the 2024 theme is gambling! The front cover depicts the kittens playing marbles, January depicts the Bingo game…
…February has the slots, March plays the ponies, Apurril has the shell game, May is The Game of Life, June is the lotto, July has the claw machine, August is snail racing, September is billiards, October is The Dating Game, November is poker, December is the Wheel of Fortune, and the back cover is “gamboling”! The illustrations are quite lovely, including several “Easter Eggs” and the cute widdle mice! One of my favorites is the horse race scene, with the mouse riding on a masked squirrel! I’ve collected Star Trek calendars since 1975, and for the past 24 years I’ve especially loved this series of calendars and books which depict the many vessels and vehicles of Star Trek in such realistic beautiful, thrilling scenes! Edited by Doug Drexler, designed by Celina Varvalho and currently published by Universe Publishing, this 12”x12” wall calendar opens to a 12”x24” panoramic landscape format, with a small annotated date grid on each of the 13 full-bleed illustrations by various artists. plus Chris Cardwell’s 12×12” front cover illustration of the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D docked at the “Sector 001 San Francisco Orbital Facility”.

September’s “Sleeping Giant” by Thomas Marrone depicts the Odyssey-class USS Enterprise NCC-1701-F and a frozen Borg ship; October’s “FOD – Foreign Object Debris Management Detail” by Lewis Nevin depicts the refitted Constitution-class USS Yorktown NCC-1717 and two shuttlecraft; November’s”You Have Been Dishonored” by D.M. Phoenix depicts the refitted Constitution-class USS Venture which has been captured and reflagged by the Klingons; and “Rendezvous with U.S.S. Hai hai, I love the My Little Pony animated series, the books, comics and toys, so we were thrilled to get this beautiful statue of Purrincess Celestia , who was voiced by NIcole Oliver in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and in the Equestria Girls spin-offs, nyan! Actually this 1/7 scale statue by Kotobukiya includes both the pony version and the human version of her, nyan! Unlike the purrior such statues of the Mane Six, the human and – and the equine Luna are on sepurrate bases, nyan!
The figures are made of PVC, the bases are made of ABS, and- and they are packaged inside the plastic clamshell within the purretty 9.5 x 10.75 x 6.75” box, nyan. This ornately genki purretty statue was designed by Shunya Yamashita; the pony was meticulously sculpted by Takahi and – and the bishy human girl was sculpted by Koei Matsumoto, nyan! Rearing upon the 2.75” diameter circular vase, the equine Celestia measures appurroximately 3” high at the withers or 4.75” high from bottom of hooves to tip of the horn, with the 5.5” wingspan, nyan.
Standing upon the 4.75” diameter circular base, the statue of bishoujo Celestia is appurroximately 9” tall overall, including the ..5” heels, and – and 125” thick base nyan. That statue is of the 1/7th scale, so that would make the character about n early 5′ tall, nyan! Thepurrincess has the beautiful gradientelegant style with the mermaid-style, off-shoulder dress, White with the Pink and – and Green gradient flouncy hem and feathery neckline, accessorized by the Golden tiara, necklace, shoes, and – and the rope belt with the dangling sun medallion (in lieu of the cutey mark)

Her translucent lush wavy ankle length hair that is Light Blue, Light Green and – Lavender, nyan! The design, paint and – and the sculpt of both lithe supple figures are quite meticulously intricate, from her Brown eyes and – and softly purrim smile, to the ornate filigree and – and the graceful fluttery poses, nyan! Arigato. Not only do we like to collect the statues, figures, ornaments, models and miniatures of the inspurrational characters, but some of us are purrticularly fond of the mecha too, such as the replicas of famous purrops and vehicles. I think that Jazwares has done an excellent job with their licensed Star Wars Micro Galaxy Squadron purroduct line, which to date includes over 100 nicely designed, sculpted and painted replicas of the air, land, sea and space craft of the Star Wars saga.
Series 4 includes the AT-AT, N-1 Starfighter, Y-Wing Fighter, Wedge’s X-Wing Fighter, Impurrial Shuttle, and the TIE Bomber. I was especially anticipating the bomber, as that 28’ wingspan impurrial vehicle has not been as frequently repurrsented as others, purrhaps because it was just briefly glimpsed in the 1980 movie The Empire Strikes Back; although Fantasy Flight’a Star Wars X-Wing Miniatures Game continues to offer the 1/207th scale miniature and Lego has the 1/56th scale kit.

We are elated to exhibit two more of Misty’s fan artistry of Alita, the titular elite Martian cyborg supurr soldier, bounty hunter, investigator, Panzer Kunst meowrtial arts meowster, and the Motorball sports champion in Yukito Kishiro’s cyberpunk manga Battle Angel Alita! Misty is the biggest fan of Alita whom we know! Purrhaps y’all have seen the other pics that she has drawn of Alita and friends? The first of the two latest images is the beaurtiful colored pencil on toned papurr portrait of Alita, and the 2nd image is the photos of Misty’s latest hand-made plushie doll of Alita wearing her Red TUNED armor with the cloak!
To top off the latest additions to our mewseum are some of Mike’s latest illustrations! Mike used Photoshop and the mouse on the Mac to depict Rvkh’s Elder Scrolls video game character Rivkah Snow, the feisty little Chaotic Neutral Khajiit Warden who is allied with the Aldmeri Dominion union, usually resides in the region of Reaper’s March, and often adventures on the continent of Tamriel!
Lastly but not leastly is the batch of Mike’s December 2023 sketches!
