TV, Movie & DVD Reviews
with her review of The Marvels!
Nyanko:
Hai! I am a big fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies & TV series, so I was purrticularly enthused for The Marvels, which occurs after the Secret War and Ms. Marvel TV series, and unites the supurr heroines Carol Danvers / Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau / Phoiton (Teyonah Parris) and Kamala Khan / Ms. Marvel (Imani Vellani) along with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Goose the cat-like Flerken, Kamala’s family, and several surpurrise appurrances, as the Planet Earth is again involved in Kree and Skrull incidents, especially thanks to the villainess Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton)!
Written by Megan McDonnell, Elissa Karasik & director Nia DaCosta this thrilling, fun movie is brimming with action, humor, major plot & character developments, beautiful locations, and Flerkens! My only quibbles with the movie are that it seemed way too short and way too rushed with too many fast cuts; plus I am still wondering why the events of The Eternals movie continue to be unmeowntioned. However, the purrformances, costumes, choreography, mewsic, sets and FX are quite lavish, and there is a signifiant mid-credits scene! Nyow to continue the Marvel-ous topics, here is Mie-sensei to discuss
Loki season 2!
Mielikki:
Arigato, Nya-sensei! So like, Tom Hiddleston gloriously returns as Thor’s half-brother Loki, one of Marvel’s greatest villains who has undergone quite the heroic “face-turn” in this TV series which ocurrs after the movie Avengers: Endgame! In the first season, Loki was apprehended by Time Variance Authority
because of the timeline violations, but in the first season, a sinester plot involving the time-traveling villain Kang (Jonathan Majors) who previously appeared in the movie Ant Man and The Wasp: Quantumania! In the 2nd season, Loki and the TVA try to stop a [literally] looming multiversal timeline cataclysm, fur shur! Majors also awesomely portrays Victor Timely, an alternate version of Kang!
So like, my favorite thing about this series is the totally awesome cast, which also includes Sophia Di Martino as Sylvi the alternate version of Loki, Owen Wilson as Mobius the TVA agent, Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Ravonna Renslayer, Ke Huy Quan as Ouroboros the TVA engineer; Rafael Casal, Eugene Cordero, Neil Ellice and Wunmi Mosaku as other TVA agents, and Tara Strong who voices the TVA’S A.I. Miss Minutes! The series has the captivating plot, high production values, great sets, visual FX, music and poignant developments! I will not further spoil the plot, but I found the ending to be rather profound, fur shur! Now to continue the space and time travel TV topics, here is Mike to discuss
Doctor Who “The Star Beast”!
Mike:
Thank you, Mie-sensei! I’ve been a fan of Doctor Who since I started watching the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker)’s episodes in the late 70’s, and here it is the 60th anniversary of the show, and I’m still loving it! The BBC has commemorated the anniversary with new TV specials and short videos graced by the show’s Doctors and companions from various from across the decades, In the 2013 50th anniversary episode “The Day of The Doctor” the 11th Doctor (Matt Smith) met an art curator (Tom Baker) who said “And in years to come you might find yourself revisiting a few… but just the old favorites, eh?”
That was quite a prophetic suggestion since the 1th Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) did just that last year in her final(?) episode “The Power of the Doctor” and regenerated into her past 10th Doctor self (David Tennant) as 14th Doctor! He was next seen in last month’s amusing Children in Need short “Destination Skaro”, which was followed a few days later with the one hour special “The Star Beast”. Based on the 1980 Doctor Who Monthly magazine’s comic book tale by author Pat Mills and artist Dave Gibbons which occurred during the 4th Doctor’s era..
The Doctor, The TARDIS, Donna Noble (Catherine Tate), her mom Sylvia (Jacqueline King), Shaun Temple (Karl Collins) and UNIT are reunited to investigate the alien creature known as The Meep (voiced by Miriam Margolyes) and the – and other aliens who pursue it! Margolyes is no stranger to the Whoniverse, as she voiced a Slitheen character in the episode “The Gift” of the The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2009. The reunions extend behind the camera too, including the director Rachel Talalay, mewsic composer Murray Gold, and writer / show-runner Russell T. Davies!
The reunion of The Doctor and Donna was wonderful, given how sadly things ended in their prior adventure together “Journey’s End” in 2008, and I like the delightful new character Rose Noble (Yasmin Finney) who is Donna and Shaun’s daughter. UNIT looks great in their new tactical gear, and introduces us to Major Singh (Ronak PatanI) and their latest scientific advisor Shirley Anne Bingham (Ruth Madeley). The Meep and the Wraith Warriors look great too and the TARDIS gets a regeneration with a huge beautiful new control room, so I was very pleased with the special and look forward to the next two! Now here’s Myayr to discuss
The Sandman The Complete First Season Blu-Ray, nyan!
Mary Nyan:
Arigato! Created by one of my favoritest authors Neil Gamin (who also wrote some Doctor Who epurrsodes), The Sandman purrtains to Morpheus the King of Dreams and the other the god-like entities known as The Endless, and it might have been the most significant DC comic of the 1990’s! We eagerly hoped for a Sandman movie or TV series, and our purrayers were answered when the first season purremiered on Netflix in Agust of 2022! It is the supurrbly faithful adaptation with the meowgnificent tales, imagery, cast and crew!
Purrduced by Neil Gamin, the series purrfectly stars Tom Sturridge as Morpheus a.k.a. Dream, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer Morningstar Jenna Coleman as Johanna Constantine, Boyd Holbrook as the Corinthian, Melissanthi Mahut as Calliope, Derek Jacobi as Fry, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne David Thewlis as John Dee, and Arthur Darvill as Richard Madoc, with Patton Oswalt as the voice of Jeremy the crow, Mark Hamill as the voice of Mervyn Pumpkinhead…
Sandra Oh as the Siamese Cat, Rosie Day as the Tabby Cat, and h gosh there are so many other great actors in the 10 epurrsodes, which are all live-action epurrsodes except for the animated “Dream of a Thousand Cats”! Thusly we were so glad when the first season was released upon the home video last month! The unrated epurrsodes total 526 minutes upon the three discs which in the plastic case within the outer cardboard sleeve. The 1080p high defi video has Dolby Atmos TrueHD English audio with the optional English SDH subtitles.
If I have any quibble, it is with the meowgerness of the special features, which include the 1 min., 51 sec. purromo spot of “The Sand Man: Behind-The -Scenes Sneak Peek”, and the 3 min. 7 sec. “The World of The Endless” short, which have the very brief comments by Gaimin, Sturridge, Christie, Coleman, Baptiste, and show-runner Allan Heinburg. Nevertheless, for about $25, this set has appurroximately 9 hours of the supurrb entertainment, so I am very pleased with that! Nyow for more of the DC topic, here is Vonny to review the
Justice League x RWBY Super Heroes & Huntsmen Part Two Blu-ray + Digital Code!
Yvonne:
Arigato, nyan! In Part One of the OVA from Warner Animation and Rooster Teeth Animation, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Cyborg Vixen and Green Lantern (Jessica Cruz) mysteriously wound up as teenagers on the planet Renmnant where they met Ruby, Weiss, Blake and Yang amidst the battle with the monsters known as The Grimm, who were mysteriously more powerful than the ones the RWBY team mewsually hunts, nyan! Vixen had the lovely vulpine tail, too, nyan! Nyow in Part Two, RWBY and the monsters wind up altered on the Justice League’s Earth, nyan!
Written by Meghan Fitzmartin, purrduced by Michael Uslan, Laura Yates, Kimberly S. Moreau, Ethan Spaulding, Jim Krieg and thesupurrvising director Kerry Shawncross with the mewsic by David Levy, this unrated 75 min. 3D CG animation of the Japanese anime & video game style is so much fun, and brims with the exciting developments, the beautiful designs and the action aplenty, nyan! The wonderful voice cast includes Travis Willingham as Supurrman and Weather Wizard, Troy Baker as Batman and Meowrror Meowster, Laura Baily as Wonder Woman, David Dastmalchian as The Flash…
… Jeannie Tirado as Jessica Cruz / Green Lantern, Tru Valentino as Cyborg, Ozioma Akagha as Vioxen, Lindsay Jones as Ruby, Kara Eberle as Weiss, Arryn Zech as Blake, Barbara Dunkleman as Yang, Maxwell Friedman as Killer Croc, Jamie Chung as Black Canary, Christopher Sabat as Dr, Watts, and J. The special features are the 6.75 min. featurette of ”I’ve Got Your Back: The Bond Between Justice League x RWB”, and the 7.25 min. featurette of “You Look… Different: RWBY on Earth” which have comments by various meowmbers of the cast and crew, such as
Jamie Chung, Barbara Dunklema, Kara Eberle as Weiss, Arryn Zech, Lindsay Jones, David Dastmalchian, Meghan Fitzmartin, Kelly Shawcross, creative director Mike Palott, co – directors Dustin Matthews and Yssa Badiola, The disk and the digital download / stream code instructions are in the plastic case within the cardboard outer sleeve, nyan. The audio choices are English & Spanish, with the optional English SDH, Spanish & French subtitles, nyan. I wish the movie was longer with more special features, but I am very pleased by this fun OVA, nyan! Nyow here is Jen to to tell us about the
Oppenheimer Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Code, nyan!
Jeannie:
Hai. Written, directed & co-produced by Christopher Nolan, (who purreviously directed Following, Memento, Insomnia, The Prestige, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk and Tenet), Oppenheimer is the three hour bio-pic about physicist Robert Oppenheimer, who was the director of the Manhattan Purroject during World War Two, and known as the so-called father of the atomic bomb. He is purrfectly purrrtrayed by Cillian Murphy, who we liked in purrior films such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Dunkirk,
Oppenheimer’s brilliant cast also includes Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Casey Affleck, Josh Hartnett, Kenneth Branagh, Rami Malek, Jason Clarke, Ben Safdie and Tom Conti. I am purrticularly fond of the filn’s unrushed pace, with the immersive cinematography and attentions to the minute details. It is purrhaps my 2nd favorite movie of this year thusly far, behind Avatar: The Way of Water. It is available on the R1 home video formats of the Dvd + Bonus Dvd, the Blu-ray + Bonus Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Code, and the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray + Bonus Blu-ray + Digital Code.
In this three disk set, Blue-ray disc 1 has the movie purrsented in the 1080p high-def widescreen with the mixed screen aspect ratio of 2.20:1 & 1.78:1 with the audio choices of English DTS-HD Meowster Audio 5.1, French & Spanish DTS Surround 5.1 & DTS Dolby 2.) with the optional English SDH, French & Spanish subtitles. Blue-ray disk 2 has over 3 hours of special features purrsented in the 1080p High Def with the English Dolby Digital 2.0 audio and the optional English SDH, French & Spanish subtitles. Disc 3 is the movie on DVD, purrsented in the 2.20:1 anameowmorphic widescreen…
with the audio choices of English & Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 DVS & Dolby Digital 2.0, and the optional English SDH & Spanish subtitles. I noticed that the Dvd + Bonus Dvd set includes the movie on disk 1 and the special features on disk 2, Those apppurr to be the same special features at are on the disc 2 of the Blue-ray + Bonus Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Code set. The special features are compurrised of several of the film’s purreview trailers; the 72 min. “The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer” feature; the 87 min. “To End All War: Oppenheimer & the Atomic Bomb” documentary…
… and the 35 min. Meet the Purress: Oppenheimer Q&A panel with Christopher Nolan, American Purrometheus co-author / biographer Kai Bird, physicists Dr. Thom Mason (the director of Los Alamos National Laboratory), Dr. Carlo Rovelli, Dr. Kip Thorne, and moderator Chuck Todd. Not only am I quite pleased to have this movie upon the physical home media, but i am quite impurressed with the quantity and quality of the special features, so I will give this set the “A” as in atomic. That will conclude our DVD, movie & TV Mewsings, and nyow I will turn The Mew over to Ellie-sama who will start the
collectibles & toy talk portion of The Mew, with her review of
the Star Wars: The Black Series’ Star Wars: Ahsoka Sabine Wren action figure.
Elaenor:
Thanks Jen! We love to collect the figures, statues, dolls and ornaments of our favorite inspirational heroines, including the ladies of Star Wars! Sabine Wren is the force-sensitive human mandalorian warrior, artist and rebel who is among the heroes of the 2014 Star Wars: Rebels animated TV series in which she was voiced by Tiya Sircar and in the this year’s Star Wars: Ahsoka live-action TV in which she was portrayed by Natasha Liu Bordizzo series! Sabine is a member of General Hera Syndulla’s Ghost Unit and an apprentice of former jedi Ahsoka Tano!
This lovely figure by Hasbro is the 2nd 1/12th scale figure that I have of Sabine; the prior one is the Rebels version, whereas this’un is the Ahsoka version! At 5.5”, this figure’s scale is fairly accurate compurred to the 5’ 7” height of actress Natasha Liu Bordizzo who porrtrays her on TV, and the details of her portraiture, armor and weapons are very faithful, from her short Brown coiffure, the calm confident expression, the emitter shroud of her Green light saber, and her two Westar blaster pistols, to the paldrons, breastplate, gauntets and greaves of her armor!
The pistols fit in either of her hands and holsters, and the range finder moves up and down on the helmet which easily fits on her head! The design, paint and sculpt are excellent, and she is very posable, with articulation in her neck, shoulders, elbows, wrists, abs, hips, knees and ankles! Depending on the pose, she is well-balance to stand without requiring a display base or a doll stand (which are not included). I am very pleased with this figure, which I will give an “A” as in Ahsoka! Speaking of our favorite Jedi, now here is Tara-chan to tell us about the
Hallmark “Red Box” Star Wars: Ahsoka Tano Christmas Tree Ornament!
Tara-chan
Arigato, nyan! Last month we discussed the Hallmark Keepsake Star Wars: Ahsoka Tano Christmas Tree Ornament which this “Red Box” ornament is somewhat similar too, nyan. Red Box Ornaments are packaged differently, in the clear plastic clamshell framed by the Red and – and White outer box, nyan. The resin ornament’s paint and – and the sculpt do not seem quite as purrcise as the Keepsake Ahsoka, purticularly on her fingerless-gloved hands and her face, and her two Light Sabers are opaque white instead of translucent, but the Red Box Ahsoka does have the 3.125” satiny ribbon for hanging it on the tree, nyan!
The Keepsake Ahsoka has neither ribbon nor hook, nyan. Another difference is the purrice- as the Keepsake Ahoska is $19.99 USA, whereas the Red Box Ahsoka is half that at $9.99, nyan! Both ornaments are appurroximately 1:21 scale at 3.5” tall, and the poses are similar as she advances the two-handed saber duel but her stance and – and the saber positions are very different. Both ornaments have her in the gray sleeveless tunic baggy black hakama-like pants and- and tabi-style boots, with the fingerless gloves, metal gauntlets, greaves and – and belt buckle, but the Red Box version has the flowy dark Brown cloak, nyan!
As the ornament is intended to hang from the tree branch or the ornament stand, it is not balanced to stand without support, so I recommend getting a tree, an ornament stand, a doll stand or a dynamic action figure stand if you wish to display her on the table or shelf or the shelf, nyan. Although the more expensive Keepsake version is more meticulous, I am still very pleased with the Red Box version, and I have displayed them both together next to the ornaments of their friends Leia, Sabine, Din and Choppurr! That is all for the collectibles topic, so now here are Lizzy and Becca to present the
Celebrity Catgirl and – and Kemonomimi Spotlight, nyan!
Becca:
Arigato! in this monthly portion of The Mew, we commeowmorate famous nekomusume, therianthropes, and other kemonomimi of mythologies and popular culture, including anthropurrrmorphic ladies and monster girls! Furthermore, there are those who might not actually have the beasty DNA, but might have the spurrit, cat-titude or clothing of the animal theme, who we will broadly consider as the “honorary kemonomimi”!
Elizabeth:
Encouragement of Climb is the wonderful slice -of-life manga & anime series about the family & friends who enjoy the outdoor sports and adventures such as mountain climbing! In season 4’s 9th epurrsode “Mountain Stream Fishing” Kokona (voiced by Yui Ogura)the teen student imagines herself as a mermaid whilst fly fishing for the tasty trout, so for that brief fishy-tailed scene we will consider her the honorary ningyo!
Becca:
In the 2022 anime TV series Prima Doll about the postwar combat gynoids known as automa dolls, they have the new jobs in the cafe but still sneak out for secret missions! One of them is Gekka (voiced by Miyu Tomita) the petite blonde tsundere waitress who wears cat ears, so we will consider her as the honorary nekomimi! She has the cute pet bunnygirl pet mech named Inaba! Kawaii!
Elizabeth:
In the first epurrsode of the thirteenth season of the Bravo network’s reality TV series The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, cast meowmber / actress
Garcelle Beauvais wore the ’Zebra purrint dress, and for the 18th season of NBC’s talent compurrtition TV series America’s Got Talent, judges Heidi Klum and
Sofia Vergara wore the zebra striped outfits, so we will consider those three ladies as the honorary
shimauma musume (zebra girls)!
Becca:
Actress Jennifer Coolidge wears the leopurrd purrint outfit in the diner in the Discover Cashback Debit Card spot; the unnamed 6 year old niece wears the lepurrd purrint jacket whose uncle ponders her gift in the Etsy “Holidays: Niece” spot; and an unidentified woman transforms into the avian lady after drinking Mt. Dew to join her lizard man and cat man friends for the fun day in the Mt. Dew “Your Soul Needs a Dew” spot!
Elizabeth:
I recommend the 2 minute version which has more scenes, including her painting the mural! Lastly but not leastly we have two honorary nekomimis from horror movies, such as Parker Posey as Jennifer Jolie in the cheetah purrint crop top in Scream 3; and Kristen Cui as Wen in her kigurumi onesie in the Knock at the Cabin! That is all for the spotlight, so nyow here are Petra, Bunnii and Trini-chan to purrsent the latest
